Wheel of Fortune Motif Cloth (1941): vintage crochet pattern

Materials

• Knit-Cro-Sheen mercerized cotton (a size 10 weight today)
• Yardage: About 10½ yd per motif, as printed
• Tapestry needle, rustproof pins and starch for blocking
• Hook: Start with a 1.8 mm (US 6) steel hook and change size so one motif measures 3½ inches from side to side when blocked (the printed hook is Milward's No. 6).

Motif

1. Starting at center, ch 6, join with sl st.
2. Rnd 1: Ch 5, * dc in ring, ch 2. Repeat from * 4 more times, join to 3rd st of ch-5.
3. Rnd 2: Ch 4, 2 tr in same place as sl st, * ch 2, tr in next sp, ch 3, sl st in last tr, ch 2, 3 tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 with sl st to 4th st of ch-4. Now pick up only the back loop of each tr throughout.
4. Rnd 3: Ch 4, tr in same place as sl st, * tr in next tr, 2 tr in next tr, ch 7, 2 tr in next tr of 3-tr group. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-7 to 4th st of ch-4.
5. Rnd 4: Ch 4, tr in same place as sl st, * tr in next 3 tr, 2 tr in next tr, ch 4, skip 3 ch of ch-7, sc in next ch, ch 3, sc in same place, ch 4, 2 tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-4 to 4th st of ch-4 first made. Fasten off. This completes motif.
6. Sew motifs together at tr-groups, on wrong side, picking up a single loop of each tr.
