Rose Filet Cloth (1948): vintage crochet pattern

Materials

• Size 30 mercerized crochet cotton (printed: Star Article 20, Size 30)
• Yardage: 30 balls × 325 yd = about 9,750 yd of size 30 cotton, plus 3 yd of 36-inch linen, as printed
• Tapestry needle, rustproof pins and starch for blocking
• Hook: Start with a 1.0 mm (US 12) steel hook — the printed size is No. 12 — and check that your meshes are square.

Instructions

1. Ch 200, dc in 8th st from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts of ch, * ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, dc in next st, repeat from * 14 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts of ch, * ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, dc in next st, repeat from * 24 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts of ch, * ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, dc in next st, repeat from * 18 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts of ch, ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, dc in last st, ch 5 to turn each row.
2. Row 2: D c in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, * ch 2, dc in next dc, repeat from * 18 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc (a solid mesh), * 2 dc in mesh, 1 dc in next dc, repeat from * once, * ch 2, dc in next dc (an open mesh), repeat from * 22 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, * ch 2, dc in next dc, repeat from * 14 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 2, dc in 3rd st of ch.
3. Row 3: 1 open mesh, 1 solid mesh, 15 open meshes, 1 solid mesh, 22 open meshes, 2 solid meshes, 21 open meshes, 1 solid mesh, 1 open mesh. Continue working back and forth according to diagram to arrow, then repeat from beginning to arrow 6 times.
4. Work 2 more lengths of insertion in same manner and finish all edges with a row of sc, working 2 sc in 1 mesh and 3 sc in next mesh and 5 sc in each corner mesh.
5. Cut 2 strips of linen 4 inches wide and required length. Cut 2 strips of linen 14 inches wide and required length. Work a row of sc over a narrow rolled hem around linen sections. Sew linen and insertion together as illustrated.
6. EDGE: Join thread in corner, * 1 sc in each of the next 12 sc, ch 5, turn, sc in 6th sc from hook, ch 5, sc in 1st sc made, ch 1, turn and work 9 sc over first ch 5 loop and 5 sc over 2nd loop, ch 5, turn, sc in center st of 1st scallop, ch 1, turn and work 5 sc over loop, ch 3, slip st in top of sc for picot, 4 sc over same loop, sl st in top of 2nd scallop and finish same scallop with 4 more sc, slip st into sc of previous row, repeat from * all around, fasten off. If napkins to match are desired, cut squares of linen the size required and work a row of sc over a narrow rolled hem.
7. EDGE: Starting at corner, * 1 sc in each of the next 6 sc, ch 5, turn, sc in 1st sc, ch 1, turn, work 3 sc over loop, ch 3, slip st in top of sc for picot, 3 sc over same loop, repeat from * all around, fasten off.
8. When worked on a chain, work the first dc in 8th ch from hook * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, repeat from *. Succeeding rows, ch 5 to turn and dc in dc, * ch 2, dc in next dc, repeat from *.
9. Four double crochets form 1 solid mesh and 3 dc are required for each additional solid mesh.
10. To increase a solid mesh at end of row, work a tr in same space with last dc, work 2 more tr working each tr into lower loop of previous st.
11. To increase 1 open mesh at end of row, ch 2, tr in same space with last dc.
12. To increase 1 open mesh at beginning of row, ch 8, dc in 1st dc.
13. To increase a solid mesh at beginning of row, ch 5, 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in next st of ch, dc in next dc.
14. To decrease a mesh at beginning of row, sl st across 1st mesh.
