Treble Crochet: step-by-step tutorial
Treble crochet is a tall crochet stitch roughly three times the height of single crochet. Yarn over twice, insert the hook, and pull up a loop for four loops on the hook. Then yarn over and pull through two loops three times until one loop remains.

How to treble crochet, step by step
- Yo twice.
- Insert the hook into the fifth chain from the hook, or into the next stitch.
- Yo and pull up a loop — 4 loops on hook.
- Yo and pull through 2 loops — 3 loops on hook.
- Yo and pull through 2 loops — 2 loops on hook.
- Yo and pull through the last 2 loops — 1 tr made.
- Ch 4 to turn at the start of the next row.
How do you treble crochet?
Treble crochet starts with two yarn-overs before inserting the hook, then works off the loops two at a time three times.
Keep each pull-through even so the posts are the same height; uneven tension shows clearly in tall stitches.

What is treble crochet used for?
Treble crochet is used for lacy shawls, open summer tops, tall shells and fans, and quick drapey scarves.
It produces an open fabric with visible gaps, so it is less suitable for warm or stuffed items.
Is US treble crochet the same as UK treble?
No. US treble crochet is UK double treble. The UK treble is the US double crochet.
Patterns labelled “treble” without a stated terminology should be checked against the stitch counts and gauge before starting.
