Large Table Ruffle Doily (1940s–50s): vintage crochet pattern

Materials

• Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton (Article 40) — size not printed; choose a mercerized cotton crochet thread that matches the finished size
• Yardage: 11 balls as printed (ball yardage not printed — check the ball band)
• Tapestry needle, rustproof pins and starch for blocking
• Hook: Start with a 1.65 mm (US 7) steel hook — the printed hook is a No. 7 steel — and change size to reach the printed diameter.

Instructions

1. Ch 7, join to form a ring, ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join in 1st sc.
2. Rnd 2: * Ch 3, sc in next sc, repeat from * all around, ch 3, join (12 loops).
3. Rnd 3: sl st into loop, ch 6, tr in same space, * ch 3, 2 tr with ch 2 between in next loop, repeat from * all around, ch 3, join in 4th st of ch.
4. Rnd 4: Sl st into loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop, repeat from * all around, ch 3, join.
5. Rnd 5: Sl st into loop, * ch 4, sc in next loop, repeat from * all around, ch 4, join.
6. Rnd 6: Sl st to 2nd st of next loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop, repeat from * all around ending with ch 2, dc in last sl st (this brings thread in position for next round).

43. If SMALLER DOILY is desired start ruffle in either the 27th or 44th round and work as many rounds of ch 10 loops for ruffle as desired.
44. The Big Ruffle Doily that can be made for small, medium or large tables. Illustrated is the 32 inch size.
45. OR—make it a double ruffle doily by attaching a ruffle in the 44th round—or a triple ruffle with another frill in the 27th round.
