What is crochet gauge and how do you measure it?
Crochet gauge is the number of stitches and rows in a set measurement, usually 4 inches or 10 centimeters, using a specific yarn, hook and stitch. Matching the pattern's gauge makes the finished item the designed size. Measure gauge on a swatch at least 6 inches square, away from the edges.

How do you make a crochet gauge swatch?
Make a crochet gauge swatch by crocheting a square larger than the gauge measurement in the pattern stitch.
- Chain enough stitches for 6 inches (15 cm), using the gauge count plus about 50 percent.
- Work the stitch pattern stated in the gauge section for 6 inches in height.
- Fasten off and block the swatch the same way you will block the finished item.
- Let the swatch dry completely.
- Lay a ruler across the center and count stitches in 4 inches (10 cm).
- Lay the ruler vertically and count rows in 4 inches (10 cm).
What do you do if your gauge does not match?
Change hook size to adjust gauge until the swatch matches the pattern.

Gauge matters in crochet for fitted items such as hats, sweaters and socks, because a difference of one stitch per inch changes a 40 inch sweater by several inches.
Gauge matters less for blankets, scarves and dishcloths, though it still affects yardage.
Why should you block a gauge swatch?
Block a gauge swatch because many yarns relax, grow or tighten after washing. Measuring an unblocked swatch can produce a finished item that changes size the first time it is washed.
