Ribbed half double crochet chunky scarf
This chunky scarf is worked lengthwise in half double crochet through the back loops, so a few long rows build a squishy ribbed fabric quickly. Bulky yarn and an 8 mm hook make a 68 by 9 inch scarf in about four hours, with an optional fringe on each short end.

Notes before you start
- Turning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
- Because rows run the length of the scarf, the ribs run lengthways.
Scarf
- Ch 172.
- Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (170 hdc)
- Row 2: Ch 1, hdc blo in each st across, turn. (170 hdc)
- Rows 3–18: Rep Row 2. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in ends.
- Optional fringe: cut 36 pieces of yarn 12 in (30 cm) long. Fold each in half, pull the fold through a row end with your hook, pass the tails through the loop and tighten. Add 18 to each short end, then trim evenly.

Long chains twist easily. Keep the chain flat as you work Row 1, or use a foundation half double crochet instead of chain plus Row 1.
