Eight-square granny square vest

This granny square vest is made from eight large classic granny squares: four joined for the back and four for the front, with a square neck opening left by joining only part of the shoulders. Single crochet bands finish the hem, armholes and neckline. It fits a 32 to 36 inch bust with ease.

Notes before you start

  • Make 8 classic granny squares following the Classic Granny Square pattern on this site, repeating Round 4 until Round 8 is complete (96 dc per square).
  • Block all squares to 9.5 in before joining. Size is changed by the number of rounds: each round adds about 0.6 in per square.
  • For a 36–40 in bust, work 9 rounds per square (about 10 in).

Panels

  1. Back: join 4 squares into a 2 × 2 panel, holding squares right sides together and slip stitching through the back loops.
  2. Front: join the remaining 4 squares into a matching 2 × 2 panel.

Shoulders and sides

  1. Place the front and back right sides together. Along the top edge, place a marker 3 in (7.5 cm) in from each outer corner. Slip stitch the shoulders together from each outer corner to its marker, leaving the centre 13 in (33 cm) open for the neck.
  2. Along each side edge, slip stitch the panels together from the hem upwards for 10.5 in (27 cm), leaving 8.5 in (21.5 cm) open for each armhole.
  3. Turn right side out.

Bands

  1. Hem: Join yarn at a side seam. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the lower edge (1 sc in each dc and ch-sp), sl st in first sc. Rnds 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc.
  2. Armholes (both): Join yarn at the underarm. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around, sl st in first sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc.
  3. Neckline: Join yarn at a shoulder seam. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around, working sc2tog at each of the 4 inner neck corners, sl st in first sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working sc2tog at each corner, sl st in first sc.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
  2. Wet block the finished vest flat to even out the seams.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my granny square vest size?

Measure your bust and add 2–4 in of ease. Divide by 4 to get the square size you need, then work rounds until your squares reach it.

Can I make it longer?

Add a row of half squares or several extra rounds of single crochet to the hem band.
