Single crochet bucket hat in cotton
This bucket hat is worked in a continuous spiral of single crochet: a flat circular crown, a back-loop round that turns the edge, straight sides, and a brim that flares with evenly spaced increases. Worsted cotton gives it enough structure to hold its shape. It fits 21 to 22 inch heads.

Notes before you start
- Work in a continuous spiral; do not join rounds.
- In the crown, each round adds 6 stitches. Stagger the increases (work half the plain sc before the first inc on alternate rounds) so the crown stays round rather than hexagonal.
- Measure the crown after Rnd 14: it should be 6.75 in (17 cm) across.
Crown
- Rnd 1: Make a magic ring, 6 sc in ring. (6)
- Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
- Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, inc; rep from * around. (18)
- Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, inc; rep from * around. (24)
- Rnds 5–14: Continue increasing 6 sts per round, working one more sc before each inc than in the previous round. (Rnd 5: 30, Rnd 6: 36, Rnd 7: 42, Rnd 8: 48, Rnd 9: 54, Rnd 10: 60, Rnd 11: 66, Rnd 12: 72, Rnd 13: 78, Rnd 14: 84)
Sides
- Rnd 15: Sc blo in each st around. (84)
- Rnds 16–38: Sc in each st around. (84)
Brim
- Rnd 39: *Sc in next 6 sts, inc; rep from * around. (96)
- Rnd 40: Sc in each st around. (96)
- Rnd 41: *Sc in next 7 sts, inc; rep from * around. (108)
- Rnd 42: Sc in each st around. (108)
- Rnd 43: *Sc in next 8 sts, inc; rep from * around. (120)
- Rnds 44–45: Sc in each st around. (120)
- Sl st in each st around for a firm edge. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in ends.
- Steam the brim over a bowl to set its shape.

Frequently asked questions
How do I size the bucket hat up or down?
Stop the crown increases when the circumference matches your head: stitches needed = head circumference in inches × 4. Keep the stitch count a multiple of 6.
My brim is floppy — how can I stiffen it?
Work the brim with a hook one size smaller, or add two more even rounds of slip stitch. Cotton stiffens further with a light spray starch.
